Hamburg- Fischmarkt

My long time friend Gaby visited me at my parent's place in Lueneburg and gave me a lift to the Winterhude appartment via 'Hamburger Dom' and 'Schanzenviertel'. The place was just amazingly vibrant and had I not been as tired, I would have been happy to get a bite to eat in one of those amazingly cosy restaurants with their candle-lit tables spilling out onto the streets.

I wish I could have bottled the aroma of both of these iconic places...

It was a warm summer evening and when I got to the appartment that had not been used in as long as I had been away, I dreaded the dust and the musty air, but found a solution to the problem by dragging the guest bed out to as close to the balcony as I could get to and found a blanket, which should have done, except that the weather turned in the middle of the night and it started to rain and it got quite cold. What's new? I should have known better. After all...this is Hamburg!

Here's the view from that balcony...

My first school building
A busdriver from Kenya took me down to Roedingsmarkt and I caught the U-Bahn to Landungsbruecken and started walking in the rain. Thank goodness for my taking the umbrella along and for being able to raid my mum's cupboard for a warm jumper, as I had not been prepared for this change in weather.

Once I got to the markets I did not believe my eyes. It was packed! It was so crowded that I had to give up using my umbrella for fear that I may poke it accidently in someones eye. So, what to get? A Hamburg-jacket? Hmmm, tempting! But they did not have one in my colour without the hood, so I got myself a Hamburg bandanna-tie thingy instead....and of cause a Hamburg Fisherman's shirt. The one and only blue and white pin striped cotton shirt that goes anywhere with anything. It will be my favourite shirt from here on in...

...and I watched the seagulls fight over the remains of my Fischbroetchen, a breadroll with remoulade and freshly fried fish fillet.....mmmmh, to die for!

...and I bought myself a good deal of Schillerlocken, a delicacy of smoked shark belly. Yummy!

...and I bought myself a glass of Alsterwasser, a half of lemonade and the other half is made up with beer.
Well, that was breakfast...

Hamburg Fishmarket Auction Hall. This is where life happens. This is where you always get another beer at 6am and find yourself dance, or at the very least admiring someone else dance rock'n roll like there is no tomorrow. This is it at 7:30 in the morning.

There you go...Hamburg rocks!
