Those sunny days were a thing of the past when it was time to ride up to the big smoke. It was overcast and as soon as the Ninjalista hit the coastroad it was time to regret not taking the wet weather gear along on this trip. It did not stop raining until I crossed Tom Ugly's bridge and even then it sprinkled every few minutes... I was doing good time and the leathers held off most of it. When I got to Kogarah I recognised a few bikes, but they were going the other way. Hmmm?! I guessed they lived further down the road and would swing a U-turn somewhere to meet up around the corner.
When I got there, there were only a few bikes parked and no congregation. Some Brassband was getting ready and when they started to march down the road, playing their tune in perfect step timing, I got worried. Hey, I thought we were supposed to lead that parade!
That's when I met 'Fuzzy Wayne', who filled me in on the fact that we were supposed to meet an hour earlier than advertised on the website. Aaarrrrgh!
I was quite disappointed about missing out, but then I started to watch the races and that made up for it. People had dressed up and decorated the hospital beds with great imagination and they had a great time running, pushing, stacking it, jumping along the road in potato sacks...
Lots of laughs were had by all and the street was lined with an ever growing crowd. Not even the occasional sprinkle put a damper on the proceedings.
The big bonus was a street fair just around the corner, where many stalls offered ethnic foods and new and second hand goods.
Fuzzy accompanied me all the way to Heathcote, where we said goodbye. My first instinct was to go home and get on with the chores of the day, but the sun was out and chores can wait when the old highway beckons and the view from Bald Hill is glorious.
Riders started to arrive from North and South and everyone had a big smile on their face...being there...chatting away, meeting each other, loving the way the day had turned out.
