I am most disappointed that this letter to the editor was published. Obviously the author was emotional and did not think of the possible consequences. Yes, I see it is a call to arms...even if it is only a waterpistol... and I do not approve of it as such, but clearly a letter inciting dangerous behaviour should not get printed.
I have walked the Sea Cliff Bridge on many occasion and have been quite amazed at the noise passing traffic generates. At times we had to momentarily stop our conversation to continue it once the Harleys and other bikes with loud bikes had passed well enough to be able to hear each other again.
People who live close to the road put up with this on a daily basis, but especially during the weekend. This particular gentleman lives quite close to the road and where it does a slight incline after a fairly tight corner, so he cops the brunt of excellaration noise, vibrating throughout his tiny fibro clad home.
The occupants must be disappointed by the noise, especially after putting up with a year or more of digging and building at all hours, workers and builders coming and going and then there are those coal trucks... We do love that Bridge. It benefits the Illawarra's tourism and is a stunning ride with views to the end of the ocean, guarded by a huge cliff face.
It is not hard to imagine that the author must feel helpless and trapped and wants to lash out and blame someone, but in the end this is certainly not the way to go about it and the Mercury has a case to answer if the poor, readily identifyable resident suffers abuse from people who don't see the full story. There is always the other side of the coin... so please... just let it ride.
